Lifting Guide

Lifting Beams For Restricted Headroom

Choosing a lifting arrangement when hook height is limited starts with the complete rigging geometry, the load and the space available along the lifting route.

Quick answer

A lifting beam with a direct upper connection can reduce the space needed above the beam compared with an arrangement using upper slings. The beam depth, connections and lower rigging still need to fit within the available height.

Check The Complete Lifting Arrangement

A low ceiling, overhead structure or limited hook travel can restrict the space available for rigging. Start with a drawing showing the load in its required position and the hook at the relevant operating height. Show the measurement points clearly so everyone is working from the same dimensions.

Include the upper connection, beam depth, lower connections and slings. Check restrictions along the lifting route as well as at the starting and finishing positions. The equipment must suit the proposed arrangement and the planned operation.

Information For A Headroom Review

InformationWhat to provide
Available heightHook position, required load position and a drawing showing the points between which the height was measured.
LoadWeight, overall dimensions and any known centre-of-gravity information. Clearly identify estimates.
Lifting pointsLocations, spacing, connection details and any restrictions specified for the load.
Proposed riggingBeam arrangement, shackles, slings and connection dimensions, where known.
Lifting routeObstructions, access restrictions and changes in clearance during positioning.

Lifting Beam Or Spreader Beam?

A typical spreader arrangement uses angled upper slings. A lifting beam with a direct upper connection can reduce this part of the overall rigging height. This does not mean that every lifting beam is suitable for every restricted space.

Compare the full dimensions and approved configuration of the proposed equipment. The required load capacity, connection arrangement and lifting-point geometry must all be considered together.

Discuss The Requirement Before Selecting Equipment

Send Multisec the available project information and drawings to discuss a standard or bespoke lifting-beam route. Mark any dimensions or load information that still need confirmation.

This guide supports an initial equipment enquiry. It does not approve a lifting arrangement. The lifting operation needs competent planning, appropriate supervision and equipment suitable for the task. See the HSE guidance on planning lifting operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Is a lifting beam always the best option for low headroom?

No. The complete arrangement must suit the available height, load, lifting points and lifting route. A compact upper connection alone does not establish suitability.

How much headroom does a lifting beam need?

There is no single dimension for every beam. Use the dimensions of the proposed beam, connections and lower rigging together with the required load position and available hook height.

What should I send for a review?

Send the load weight, dimensions, lifting-point layout, available hook height and drawings of any restrictions. Identify estimates and information still to be confirmed.

Need Help With A Real Lift?

Send the load, span, lifting points, available headroom and any drawings. Multisec can review the requirement and identify the most suitable standard or bespoke route.
