STV (Sling to Vertical Angle)

The angle between the sling and vertical. This affects the working load limit and must be considered before lifting.

Typical Rigging Setup

Key rigging components for a standard Multi-250 spreader beam configuration.

  • Top slings (2-leg): sized to suit working load and sling angle
  • Master link / crane hook connection: matched to lifting arrangement
  • Top shackle: 200 tonne Sling Saver Wide Body bow shackle
  • Bottom shackles: 125 tonne Sling Saver Wide Body bow shackles
  • Drop links: integrated into the beam for load connection

All rigging components must be correctly rated for the lift and used in accordance with the lift plan and certified documentation.

Multi-250 Spreader Beam FAQs

Common questions about capacity, span, rigging and safe use of the Multi-250 modular spreader beam.

What is a 250 tonne spreader beam used for?

A 250 tonne spreader beam is used for major heavy lifting operations where the load must be distributed safely across fixed lifting points. The Multi-250 is typically used for offshore, marine, infrastructure and heavy fabrication projects where high capacity and controlled sling geometry are essential.

What is the maximum capacity of the Multi-250?

The Multi-250 has a maximum working load of 250 tonnes. This applies up to a maximum standard span of 15.5 metres. At longer spans, the working load limit reduces depending on the sling angle and final configuration.

What span range does the Multi-250 cover?

The Multi-250 can be configured from 1.5 metres up to 22.0 metres using modular strut sections. You can also compare it against other models in the full modular spreader beam range.

How does sling angle affect the lifting capacity?

Sling angle has a direct effect on working load limit. As the sling angle increases away from vertical, the forces within the lifting system increase, which can reduce the safe lifting capacity. Use the capacity table or capacity checker to help assess suitability.

What are the sling angle limits for the Multi-250?

The top sling angle must not exceed 45 degrees sling-to-vertical. Lower slings must remain within 6 degrees from vertical during operation. These limits are critical to maintaining the rated capacity of the beam.

Can loads be lifted from the struts?

No. Loads must only be applied at the designated end lifting points through the drop links. Loads must never be applied directly to the struts.

What rigging is required with the Multi-250?

A typical setup includes a two-leg top sling arrangement, a crane hook or master link connection, heavy-duty top shackles and bottom shackles connected via drop links. You can view suitable lifting shackles here.

Is the Multi-250 suitable for offshore lifting?

Yes. The Multi-250 is designed for offshore, marine and heavy industrial lifting applications where certified lifting equipment, traceability and controlled load distribution are required.

How do I know if the Multi-250 is suitable for my lift?

Use the capacity checker for a quick assessment or review the capacity table. For critical lifts, it is best to speak to our engineering team before confirming the final configuration.

Bespoke Spreader Beams for Complex Lifts

When standard modular systems are not enough, Multisec can design and manufacture fully bespoke lifting solutions.

While the Multi-250 represents the highest capacity within the standard modular range, some lifting operations require solutions beyond modular configurations. Multisec specialises in the design and manufacture of bespoke spreader beams and lifting systems, engineered to meet specific project requirements where capacity, geometry or lift conditions fall outside standard parameters.

This includes high-capacity beams, extended spans, unique lifting arrangements and specialist configurations for offshore and heavy infrastructure projects. Recent projects have included large-scale DNV-certified beams designed for demanding lifting operations.
